I recently purchased a new smart key for my 06' C230 Sport. When rec'd and tested by the dealer, the key worked fine (doors lock/unlock and trunk unlocked). The next day the key worked intermittently (for the most part didn't work). I returned to the dealer the following day and they replaced the battery, but the key still didn't work.

Now all keys dead including valet key and car is sitting in my garage. Am considering calling St Charles Mercedes Benz to get new keys and recoding. Some times the keys wear out. Do you have a spair key you can try. 2. Turn the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key sometime the steering wheering lock will bind. 3. Now the bummer part is the ignition lock will have to come out so you can d etermine what part froze up.Other than that you can try another key if you have one. You might have a bad key or the electronic ignition switch may have failed. There is no way to start the car if the key will not turn. You can also check fuse 27 and see if it;s blown. Fuse 27 powers the steering lock. If the steering lock fails it will also cause the key not to turn.

If you can get the key to turn, remove the tumbler immediately. If you don't and it won't turn again it needs to be cut off with a dremel. Set aside 3-4hrs to do this. When MB designed the anti-theft collar for the tumbler -- they did not fool around with any flimsey metal.
If you mention what year car in your post, someone may offer you help. If early coupe', the procedure is same as for sedan.
